For Homeowners —

Chimney scams are more common than you think.

Before you let anyone near your fireplace, read this page. Then find a verified professional in your area — someone we’ve already checked so you don’t have to start from zero.

🚨 Chimney Scam Red Flags

⚠️ Unsolicited door knock offering $49 inspection

⚠️ “I saw your chimney from the road” opener

⚠️ Pressure to decide before they leave

⚠️ No physical address or verifiable website

⚠️ Alarm at vague “damage” with no photos

⚠️ Refuses to provide written estimate before work

Your Hiring Checklist —

5 Things to Confirm Before
Anyone Touches Your Chimney

Chimney scams don’t rely on sophisticated tactics. They rely on homeowners skipping basic verification steps. These five checks take under 15 minutes — and they can save you thousands of dollars and real physical risk.

1

Ask for the license number
Don’t ask “are you licensed?” Ask for the actual license number. Look it up in your state’s contractor licensing database. Any legitimate professional will provide it without hesitation.

2

Request a Certificate of Insurance
Ask for the actual COI document — not a verbal assurance. A real COI names the contractor and includes active coverage dates. If they won’t provide one, don’t let them in your home.

3

Verify professional certifications
Ask for their certification number. Professional chimney certifications are issued by recognized industry bodies. You can verify credentials directly through those organizations’ public lookup tools.

4

Get everything in writing
Never authorize work without a written estimate. “Free inspections” that turn into $2,000+ same-day pressure quotes are the most documented scam pattern in this industry. Written estimates protect you.

5

Search their name + “complaints” and “reviews”
Do this before calling anyone. Search their company name, phone number, and address across Google, BBB, and Yelp. Look for patterns — not one-off bad reviews. Watch for the same phone number or address appearing under multiple company names, which is a common scammer tactic.

What You Should Expect to Pay —

Real Prices for Real Chimney Work

Knowing what legitimate chimney services actually cost is one of your best defenses against scams. Prices that are significantly below these ranges from an unsolicited source are a warning sign, not a deal.

Service Typical Price Range Warning Sign
Chimney sweep + Level 1 inspection $175 – $275 Under $99 from a door knock or flyer
Level 2 camera inspection (separate) $300 – $450 Quoted without actual camera equipment present
Chimney cap replacement $150 – $400 Recommended same-day without written scope
Creosote removal (Stage 2/3) $200 – $600 Diagnosed without showing you evidence
Flue liner replacement $1,800 – $3,500 Recommended without Level 2 camera footage
Partial masonry repair / tuckpointing $300 – $1,000 No written scope, priced “per crack” verbally

Homeowner FAQ

What does “Verified” actually mean on this site?

Every company with a Verified badge has gone through our manual review process — which includes confirming professional certifications through the issuing organization, reviewing their current certificate of insurance, completing a background check, and reviewing their public complaint history. It is not a self-reported badge and cannot be purchased without passing the review.

Does a Verified badge guarantee the quality of work I receive?

No. Verification is a baseline credential review conducted at the time of approval. It reduces risk — it does not eliminate it. We encourage every homeowner to still get written estimates, review the contract before signing, and ask questions. Verification tells you who the company is and that they’ve been vetted; it doesn’t guarantee the outcome of any specific job.

What should I do if I’ve been scammed by a chimney company?

Report it to your local consumer protection agency, the BBB, and your state attorney general’s office. If the company is listed in our directory and you believe they misrepresented themselves, contact us at admin@verifiedchimneypros.com so we can review their listing. We take these reports seriously.

Is Verified Chimney Pros affiliated with CSIA or other industry organizations?

No. We are completely independent. When we reference certifications like CSIA credentials, we are describing the types of credentials we verify — not indicating any affiliation with those organizations. See our full disclaimer for details.

What if I can’t find a verified company in my area?

We’re growing — if there’s no verified company in your area yet, use the hiring checklist on this page to verify any company you consider. You can also contact us and we’ll let you know if we have vetted companies nearby or expanding into your area. Additionally, you can use the report form if you encounter a company in your area that appears to be operating fraudulently.

Ready to find someone you can actually trust?

Two different audiences. One goal: make the chimney industry safer, more trustworthy, and fairer for everyone who does things right.
